I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. January 2012 started off with a bang.

Birdwatcher or Bird Photographer?

Arguably the high point of my digiscoping career was in 2012, when I won the digiscoping class in the British Birds Bird Photographer of the Year awards. The resulting picture needed cropping, but this was a job that took just a few seconds. And every photograph required the telescope to be set up on a tripod, something that took time.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of December 2012)

Corey’s BBOTW was a Brown Pelican at Montauk Inlet, a good bird in New York State, especially in December! Since my waxwings shots weren’t that hot, let’s enjoy Corey’s wayward pelican. The best bird of my weekend was Japanese Waxwing spotted where else but in Japan! How about you?

Shearwaters from Shore

The evening of September 7, 2012 was a truly memorable birding experience. There were also countless Brown Pelicans, Western Gulls, and Heermann’s Gulls, creating quite the cacophony. Outside a breakwater, there’s the area used for Mavericks , one of the world’s premiere big wave surfing contests.
