Two-thousand-twelve was a pretty darn good year for me birding-wise and otherwise. Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties. I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list.

Thank you, goddess of birding luck and text group people).* My inner self felt stuck in an area between disbelief and total joy and the voices near me were echoing this state of mind: “Oh My God,” “I never thought I would see this bird,” “Look at that bill!” “How did that bird get here?”

Most weeks, we tend to focus on the movements and migrations of birds. Will you see birds there? As is my wont, we’ll be celebrating a secular Easter replete with colored eggs, chocolate bunnies, and a fun family hike. Perhaps I’ll even see my First Phoebe of 2012. Where are you going this weekend?

Birds of Belize by Steve N. Howell and Dale Dyer and Birds of Costa Rica by Dale Dyer and Steve N. Howell joined the field guide roster this spring, very welcome in a year sadly sparse in new titles. Dale Dyer put in years working on his paintings for Birds of Central America , both in the field and in the museum.
