For those of you playing along at home, this gives me 17 new ABA birds for a total of 467 as of May 1, 2011. On the other hand, a woefully brief glimpse of a Hook-billed Kite at Bentsen State Park was all it took to move it from my world list to my ABA list.

In any case, common species like Cedar Waxwings , Chipping Sparrows , Song Sparrows , Black-capped Chickadees , Mourning Doves , American Robins , and American Goldfinch still make the scene. Turkey Vultures , American Crows , and Red-tailed Hawks continue to patrol the skies.

2011 is about to become 2012 and birders the world over are taking a look at their year lists and reminiscing about the awesome sightings and devastating dips that they have experienced. They may be drab, but their pleasant ringing song and close relationship to the prairie make for a very interesting bird.

So much for my weekend… Unless you like House Sparrows more than I do, you won’t be impressed by my best bird of the weekend. Corey, on the other hand, pulled a Philadelphia Vireo that Will Raup spotted at the Coxsackie Creek Grasslands Preserve while Corey was busy looking at a Song Sparrow.

He can’t decide between Connecticut Warbler and Clay-colored Sparrow for best bird for the weekend, since both are new Queens birds for him. They beat out Yellow-billed Cuckoo , Blue Grosbeak , Ring-necked Pheasant , Lark Sparrow , and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. That makes for 283 on ye olde Queens life list.

The birding gods rewarded them both with a Yellow-billed Cuckoo in Central Park’s ramble, though a White-throated Sparrow , a good bird in June, was a close second. Corey carved time out of his complicated schedule to bird Central Park with Nate.

Black Vulture - Despite a marked increase in Turkey Vulture sightings – nine since March of 2011 when I had my first in Queens - Black Vultures remain stubbornly absent from the borough (only two sightings reported to eBird in Queens since 2008). I wish I had put three sparrows on my last list instead of three shearwaters.

Corey’s best bird of the weekend was a Grasshopper Sparrow in Queens, his first ever in his (adopted) home borough. By their unexpected numbers and activity, I wouldn’t be surprised if they we’re planning on breeding here. Wouldn’t that be something?
