One of the most camouflaged birds in Australia is the Tawny Frogmouth and we often hear them at night when we are camping in the bush, but the chance of seeing them is less likely. We have only encountered a Tawny Frogmouth nest once before and that was at the Broome Poo Ponds in January 2010. Tawny Frogmouth becomes a branch!

In 2010 they also laid two clutches of two eggs and the second clutch did hatch, but the chicks were then predated. The eggs remained there for the whole season and we presume that they were young and inexperienced. In 2009 they laid two clutches of two eggs, but they were all predated.

There was only one that survived to fledge in 2010, two in 2011 and two in 2012. In fact they were the only pair to successfully raise a chick in the 2008 season and only one other chick survived in 2011. In 2007 one Pied Oystercatcher was fledged along this stretch of beach and none succeeded in 2009.

In my younger days I always kept year lists: my best ever year was 1986, when I topped the 1,000 mark thanks to trips to Australia, Kenya and various European destinations. Spoonbills nested in Britain for the first time for 300 years in 2010, when a small colony became established at Holkham in North Norfolk.

Oriental Pratincoles Glareola maldivarum are usually seen in large flocks in Australia and the numbers can be staggering as I mentioned in a post some time ago. They breed in Asia, so are only present in the north of Australia from approximately November to April. A similar situation followed after good rains in 2010.

Later in the year we were able to travel around the north of Western Australia. Our 2020 year list stands at 324 for Victoria and the north of Western Australia combined, so we are more than happy with that under current circumstances. We then returned home to Broome and waited for restrictions on local travel to lift.
