Pied Oystercatcher breeding update

In the case of the two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that did actually hatch their eggs and have chicks for a few days they did lay once more, but then they failed to even hatch the second clutch and then no longer attempted to breed. There was only one that survived to fledge in 2010, two in 2011 and two in 2012.

An unfortunate Yellow-billed Spoonbill

That was a special encounter, because we had stumbled across a breeding colony. In 2010 I wrote of a Red Knot that had a bivalve clamped onto its foot. We were surprised to see the Yellow-billed Spoonbill , though. Our last encounter with Yellow-billed Spoonbills this year was at the Fortescue River.

A special Pied Oystercatcher

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. I can also monitor any movement along the coast during the year when they are no longer breeding.

Autumn colours

In the north of Australia we also have changing colours, but it is not the foliage that changes. The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice!
