That antiquity produces a high level of endemism, e.g. 19% of 62 breeding birds are endemic to the islands! The author, Chris Mason-Parker, has lived in Seychelles since 2009, where he is an active member of the conservation community. On the other hand, the isolation makes for those huge seabird colonies.

Brown Pelicans in non-breeding plumage. Both are the only Pelican in their non-overlapping breeding grounds. Peruvian Pelican in non-breeding plumage. Both pelicans have a very specialized foraging strategy that depends on abundant fish near the surface. Brown Pelican in Breeding Plumage.

They breed on a number of basaltic lakes in southwestern Argentina, and it is not entirely clear where they all winter, but some wintering Hooded Grebes have been found outside their breeding range (and a few none-breeding birds have been found year round at two locations on the Atlantic, apparently).

These dives – for small schooling fish – can begin at a height of 65 feet , and after they have made their catch they must let the water slowly drain from their bills. In 1961 they stopped breeding in Louisiana and a few years later disappeared altogether, prompting the legislature to name them the state bird in 1966.

In a rock-garden in the middle of the river, one Fasciated Tiger-Heron was fishing, with both Amazon and Green Kingfishers nearby. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years. 130 mature individuals, in 2019 (Monge et al. 2010; Macaw Recovery Network 2019).

This is a poor photo I took of this pair’s nest back in 2009. We are all watching intently as these two beautiful raptors attempt another successful breeding season without further disturbance. We have been assured by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) that they are watching this nest also.
