Week four: We wrap up our stay in the US.

The end of this rather long road trip finds us here in Puyallup, Washington which is just south of Seattle. We pulled into the RV park next to the Washington State Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon, and it promptly started snowing! It seems like the farther the north we go, the colder, and wetter, and a whole lot snowier it gets!

Anna’s Hummingbird is resident in California, up through Oregon and into Washington and during the colder months will certainly be the most frequently seen hummer in the area. In the photo above the crown can be seen slightly raised. Often it is the only one likely to be seen then.

The Lesser Goldfinch: A Common California Species

The male (seen below) has a black cap and, in Washington, Oregon, California, and Baja California, nearly all males have green backs. It was great fun watching them raise their young that summer. Both of these species show gregarious flocking behavior except when nesting.

This week’s trip took me to Washington DC and we stay to the south west of IA Dulles in an area dense with glass buildings. We had already had to deploy the stepladder to raise my diminutive frame above the fence line. I was delighted to see that a back-lit bill could be achieved at the same time as a highlight in the eye.
