The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

There’s no way around it as the various species are reasonably common, and you will surely want to identify them. Sedge Warbler (left) and Grasshopper Warbler (right – duh!). Of course, there are several other brown warblers with stripes, such as the Aquatic Warbler , or the Lanceolated Warbler.

We follow the tire tracks in an off-white, salty soil and then, without a word of warning, our guide/driver turns into the bushes, driving left and right… until one and then another Short-eared Owl flushes in front of us. The next two species are the Southern Grey Shrike and the Tawny Pipit , also characteristic for this habitat type.

It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.

I spent a lovely three hours in Beltrami and saw loads of great things ( Gray Jay , Veery , Black-throated Green Warbler , White-throated and Lincoln’s Sparrows , Sandhill Crane , Short-eared Owl ), but none of my quest birds. For this reason, the species is evaluated as Vulnerable.” And yes, sparrows in areas with polluted air are less healthy. It just looks stupid.

You can argue that large waders of Florida are flashier or that the secretive Bachman’s Sparrow elicit more respect, and sure, Pine Warblers nest as far north as southern Canada so how can they really be southeastern, but if you raise these points I think you fail to realize how truly prolific Pine Warblers are in the south.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting. Isn’t that neat?

At the furthest reach of the garden, a boardwalk has been built to raise visitors above the forest floor. Timings are 08.00 ‘til 17.00. It features lakes lawn and forest.
