There are very few reports from sites further afield although with all public and most private parks closed, a birder can’t go to such official protected areas anyways. Even second growth could reward yard birders with beauties like White-collared Manakin , Golden-hooded Tanager , and the smart looking Black-cheeked Woodpecker.

In two months they will depart for valleys, leaving the bare branches bare of birds, too – apart from woodpeckers – but for now they are in the forest. In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. I am still looking for that elusive Hairy Woodpecker, but I did get to add a Red-breasted Sapsucker to the list. These were my first Fox Sparrows of the year.

Calilegua is the only national park in the province of Jujuy that protects 76,000 ha of Yungas forest providing a bird sanctuary for many endemic species that live in this special forest. A bit further we found the White-bellied Hummingbird and finally we heard a Cream-backed Woodpecker and soon he was climbing the trees around us.
