The lush understory supports a multitude of different ecological niches yet still affords good sightlines to spy the species within. And what a wealth of species the Royal Mile holds. While the species sounds delicious, the nearly tailless bird presents a very bland appearance. Smart chimps steer clear of weird birders.

As in many parts of the present world, the best accessible habitat is usually at the end of a distant road. Lots of monkeys there too. There is a fair chance that the Buff-throated Foliage-Gleaners in the Osa and the Pacific slope of Costa Rica are a cryptic species. Driving through pasture in the Osa Peninsula. .

In Costa Rica, they can take the form of everything from toucans (think crows with giant shark inspired beaks) to herons and monkeys. If presented with the opportunity, there’s other things that would eat a bird too. The Collared Aracari is a small toucan with a sharp beak.

If we assume (probably incorrectly) that of apes and monkeys, they all descended from a monkey like ancestor, than apes are monkeys. In other words, the group of mammals that includes all the monkeys, which is rather large (and not accurately defined because I’ve not said what a “monkey” is … am I including lemurs?)

While entering our double kayak I asked Andrew Hester, a local bird expert, if bilharzia is present in the shallows of the Ngotwane Dam, further down the river. Like a black IPA, Lead Feather is dark and hoppy, but it presents a roasted malt character generally absent in that style. On the other hand, I didn’t the hopping out of line with many of the robust stouts and porters produced by craft brewers today.

Along that stretch, we enjoyed Fork-tailed Flycatchers and other species in the open fields and marshes including Harriss’s Hawk , the local Nicaraguan Seed-Finch , and, best of all, a pair of normally sneaky and secretive Yellow-breasted Crakes walking in the open through a grassy marsh!
