We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated. Although not at peak migration season, we still scoped this location in the event there was anything present. Boat-billed Heron As per norm, there weren’t many other birds to be seen and the sun was quickly disappearing.

My personal favorites are the images that show the relationships that are at the heart of this book–a Linneated Woodpecker perched opposite a bromeliad on an exposed tree, Azteca ants on a cecropia tree whose decaying parts provide food, and, a little distressingly, two Capuchin Monkeys feeding on a Toucan (thanks to James Adams).

The site is famous for a place called Monkey Mia, where dolphins have learnt to come up to the beach a few times a day to get snacks. But the presentation was excellent, and made education, dolphin welfare and safety a priority, and I couldn’t fault it at all. The dolphin feeding session was fun too. Yes its an absolute circus.

After another great fish lunch by the white-sand beach, many took a swim (with a dolphin present) at a place that makes you drowsy and reluctant to leave… We even had a mock mutiny, asking the tour leader to stay there overnight at least. and near-endemic Golden-backed Uakari monkeys ( Cacajao melanocephalus ). Apparently, there are about 400 species present, yet 492 were eBirded already (list-building?). Other wildlife includes Phayre’s Leaf Monkey. Its claim to fame lie in many Himalayan species hard or impossible to see elsewhere in the South-east Asia, e.g. Black-tailed Crake , Dark-sided Thrush and Purple Cochoa.

Upon our arrival in late afternoon we explored the nearby Red-capped Manakin Trail and saw a pair of Tawny-faced Quail and managed to photograph a hauler monkey, Spot-crowned Antvireo and a Black-headed Antthrush at dusk. Also this area was impacted by small towns and small farms that have setup along the access road.

A single large spider monkey, which might be out of view, equals a large number of lightly built and small birds which may be scattered across the landscape. That presumption may be wrong but I don’t think it matters for the present use of the data.) This is also because mammals are large.

I have seen both Long-tailed and Tree Pangolins , Greater Cane Rat , several species of monkey and duiker, Royal Antelope , Pel’s Anomalure (a giant flying squirrel), huge casqued hornbills, Great Blue Turacos and numerous other birds and mammals for sale along the roadsides.
