While larger animals like deer and elk are usually able to escape the fire’s path, smaller animals like squirrels, foxes and snakes are not always so lucky. A fire might kill weak birds or, depending on the time of year, claim nestlings. Here is what the area looks like now.

But what really caught my eye as I drove on the gravel road over the top of the capped landfill was a young Red-tailed Hawk feasting on what looked like a dead Gray Squirrel. It must be immensely frustrating to have food stuck on your beak when you lack hands to get it off.

Earlier, a large number of villagers were being killed by tigers: 11 in 2006, 13 in 2007 and more than 26 during 2008.

Recent studies in Sri Lanka have revealed that, upon sighting a predator, a drongo will imitate the alarm calls of at least 4 other bird species (babblers, laughing thrushes, bulbuls, and others), as well as the call given by the specific predator, i.e. a giant squirrel or eagle. This Squirrel Cuckoo, gave me my favorite photo of the trip so far. After bashing it on a branch to kill it, it did finally get it swallowed. This Slaty-tailed Trogon just never got us a great look, and when it was open, it was dumping rain. I had hoped to find the Sunbittern and the Sungrebes on this leg.

We released live mice into the flight so they could learn to catch and kill live prey. A few weeks ago squirrel was hit by a car in front of my house. I was still afraid for them, though, so I picked up the dead squirrel with a piece of rebar and put it in the woods. Thank God I only have a few neighbors. They have a schedule.

Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. the last part is raptor behavior but I can't imagine what kind of bird would be small enough to choose this space when there's 300 yds of chain link fence right there, and I've yet to see a dead squirrel, rabbit or chipmunk. but that's pretty much it for mammals.

Nearing the village, I reach a pastureland dotted with lovely Sousliks (or European ground squirrels), some of them busy eating, others playfully chasing each other, while third ones are standing on their hind legs and observing the sky – they know why. Skylarking (or singing in mid-air) is a local slang for having sex.

I also watched a red fox bury her mate after a cougar had killed him. He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Secretarybirds counter this by being very careful when killing snakes and ensuring that the prey is dead before eating it. Sometimes they will pick up other prey and, aided by their incredible height, they will kill the prey by repeatedly dropping it on hard ground. Watching them hunt is fascinating.
