Licking Clay: the Macaws of Tambopata, Peru

UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. At this hour I am a reluctant, under-caffeinated sherpa – and concentration must be given to the dangers of the footpath ahead.

Geikie Gorge

The road towards Geikie Gorge from Fitzroy Crossing is also worth taking slowly because there are some good species to be observed. I photographed one to show the brightness displayed, but for a better look at this species you can look here. A Grey Shrike-thrush was vocal and investigating the area that we chose to sit for our lunch.

Its great diversity of habitats hosts an incredible bird count of over 900 species, including Africa’s 2nd highest list of endemics and near-endemics (after South Africa). Mago National Park certainly deserved more exploration and I wished we had time to investigate the well appointed campsites along the Mago River.
