It is almost as if the island is filled to the brim with these exotic species, and they are overflowing onto the Caribbean Sea! The archetypical rainforest bird – Channel-billed Toucan.

For birders who have visited T&T in the past, the livestock station has always been a staple site for several key species that would be fairly difficult elsewhere. Am I over-confident in my thinking that we were so interesting that they were investigating us for a good half an hour, until we moved further upriver? Hoatzin is one of the species I always dreamed to see, and then I forgot they are possible on this tour, so I didn’t expect them! Adult males reach an average length of 2.32

There is a good mix of bird species both large and small. Goanna investigating the drop-off. We then added Red-collared Lorikeets , Red-winged Parrots , Red-tailed Black Cockatoos , Rufous Whistler and Royal Spoonbill to our list. You just have to go birding on your birthday really, because you never know what might show up.

I actually managed to enter the area close to the lake this week through one of the pedestrian tunnels and there were numerous Martin species nests along the pipe near the upper part of the tunnel. Martin species nest in a tunnel. Red-rumped Parrots can be quite well disguised on the grass until you approach and they lift off.

So defined, bird songs are the sounds, often but not always loud and musical, that (mostly) male birds make as part of that species’ mating system. This kind of vocalization may have evolved a few different times, though I for one am not going out on a limb to explain what some call “songs&# in hummingbirds or parrots.

We wanted to try and observe some of the bush species that we have encountered in the tall trees of New South Wales on previous holidays.
