Although designed as a field guide, it is a hefty book, 376 pages long, covering 336 species. Many species are dimorphic, with females looking different from males. Many species also differ with age. Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. Blue-moustached Bee-eater is rainforest species occurring in just a few scattered sites in Ghana, it was previously considered a subspecies of Blue-headed Bee-eater.

The Arenal forests are very good for this species. The fact that one or two families of nunbirds still occur at Luna Nueva is testament to the quality of the rainforest at this site. 140 other species : Despite the lack of a dawn chorus and rained out nocturnal birding, we still managed to identify 140 plus species.

So many species that change eye color or leg color as they age. This encyclopedic identification guide covered 43 species in 608 pages, and was illustrated with both Hans Larsson’s exceptional artwork and color photographs by multiple photographers. So many birds of white and gray touched with black. Not to mention the hybrids.
