Turtles of the World: A Guide To Every Family–A Book Review by a Turtle Lover

10,000 Birds

I happen to be particularly fond of turtles because my family has taken care of a small box turtle for 30 years (beware–turtles are extremely low-maintenance pets but will outlast your child’s youth and probably your life). Or that tortoises and terrapins are considered part of the turtle family.

Birding the Kruger Park (2): Bateleur area

10,000 Birds

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist.

Laughing at you, not with you

10,000 Birds

Not bad given that the 5 families in the inner circle of the laughingthrush family have a combined number of about 68 species. Not very interestingly, the species name “squamatum” refers to the scaly appearance of the bird rather than the blue wings. This post shows some of them.

Birding the Drakensberg, South Africa

10,000 Birds

Needed to get a reference to them into this post. The Common Waxbill looks like it belongs in a pet shop rather than in the wild. In fact, this is probably a species that has substantially expanded its original range through the pet shop route and the resulting escapees. I was vaguely curious about the family name mousebird.

Birds and People: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

It’s relatively easy to classify birds into family groups based on physical characteristics. We sing about them, we paint them, we use them as mythic and poetic symbols for our spiritual and emotional feelings, we wear them in myriad and often colorful ways, we adopt them as household pets.
