Also, there was a Black Kite awaiting us, as well as one Red-footed Falcon sitting on a dead oak branch. During WWII, the forest was used as a base of the local Partisan squad (the communist resistance), hiding in subterranean shelters. Some of those shelters are still around. Bird Counts and Cold Fronts in Costa Rica

Those were some interesting additions to a day of birding that also gave us more expected ones like Bat Falcon, Black-collared Hawk, Bare-crowned Antbird , and 125 other species. It would be to persevere and keep watching albeit maybe from a sheltered spot with a good view of the forest, a great cup of coffee, and the best of company.

Even the narrow shade under a gate is a great place to seek shelter from the sun on a hot day. Brown Songlark The next bird we came across taking advantage of the fence was a Brown Falcon and it had been sitting on a termite mound as we approached and moved to the fence.

There were a few rubbish bins and a shelter with a picnic table and benches. Returning to the rest area we were soon set up under the shelter with the storm all around us, but mostly raining in the distance and the occasional flurry of wind. The landscape was quite spectacular with the approaching storm as we attempted to outrun it!
