Brown birds near Broome

Even the narrow shade under a gate is a great place to seek shelter from the sun on a hot day. This land is currently very green from the recent rains and in very wet years it floods and becomes a great breeding area for terns. Throw in a few hundred termite mounds and you have a great environment for birds.

The first Pied Oystercatcher chicks of 2018

Pied Oystercatcher chick sheltering under an adult bird. There are several birds of prey in the area including Black Kites and Brown Falcons. Red-capped Plovers are also breeding along Cable Beach at the moment and we have observed several chicks and there are also newly laid eggs. Pied Oystercatcher family wandering the dunes.

Rufous Crab Hawk This particular wetland spills onto the sheltered southern coast – worlds apart from the roaring Atlantic pounding the east coast. I spun around just in time to catch a hulking Peregrine Falcon rocketing by. This individual flew in directly in front of me and proceeded to sit and preen for about ten minutes.
