Red-footed Falcons , Whiskered and Black Terns by mid-April, White-winged Terns are passing about a week later. Black Woodpeckers are still relatively easy to hear and see. While Saker and Peregrine Falcons have plummeted in the last decade, Red-footed Falcons are still holding on, breeding in the northern lowlands.

The forests are home to Kalij Pheasants , Crested Tree Swifts , Ashy Wood Swallows , owlets, woodpeckers, spider hunters, barbets and bulbuls, laughingthrushes and hornbills. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. The forests are also home to Asiatic Elephants and Capped Langur Monkeys.

Lesser White-fronted Geese, of course. Red-footed Falcon by BartBotje/Wikimedia Commons. The next specialty is the Red-footed Falcon in the Deliblato Sands Nature Reserve in the east of Serbia: “Two European Rollers await us on the wires, while one Eurasian Hoopoe flies by. No, they weren’t in raspberry fields.)”.

This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit. I am still looking for that elusive Hairy Woodpecker, but I did get to add a Red-breasted Sapsucker to the list.

The best birds so far were two rare geese, Lesser White-fronted and Red-breasted Goose (both my second observations ever), plus Bewick’s Swan and Red-crested Pochard – all in Greece. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopos minor. Middle Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopos medius. Common Magpie – Pica pica.

A quick check of the Collins 2 (I think American birders know this book as the “Birds of Europe”, but here, some branding mastermind has interconnected the company’s name and the book title) revealed that we are facing two Siberian Greylag Geese (race rubrirostris ). Scan of the ridge reveals a distant but definitive Peregrine Falcon.
