The Lodge at Pico Bonito is an inviting, idyllic place for relaxation as well as for enjoying wildlife. Central American Pygmy-Owl is another key species at the lodge. Cuery y Salado Preserve protects a coastal mangrove system full of wildlife from monkeys to trogons. We first visited Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge.

I learned early and often when I moved to Colorado that a birder will have to up their physical ante to experience some of these birds. Areas of mixed-coniferous and mixed-deciduous forests can yield the secretive Northern Pygmy-Owl. At which point, the Owl will lunge out at pluck the bird right off it’s perch.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts. Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls.

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. After a pleasant morning with ducks, crisp snow and sunshine, we followed the wildlife trail on our way out. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420.

My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month. It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding.
