Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of July 2021)

The best of summer birding in my experience takes place at the beach. Our land-locked species in temperate zones tend to become too focused on the little details of perpetuating their species to be sufficiently entertaining. Out on the shore, though, a whole suite of species exists in the places we gravitate to anyway.

Virginia is for Birders

It’s southernmost third, given to Virginia by accident of history rather than geopolitical intention, lies apart from the rest of the state both culturally and geographically. This was only the 6th ‘Audubon’s’ Yellow-rumped ever recorded for Virginia. Something to work on, I guess.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of September 2020)

I was shocked to still find a number of shorebird species up at Braddock Bay, perhaps because of how much productive mud the dropping lake levels have exposed. Those Springtime Blues

They refer to the depression some people experience with shorter hours of daylight, and they are not welcome. Canyon Wrens are another resident species that appears more often in the spring, even though they don’t visit the birdbath. This Rufous-backed Robin showed up again, just in time to be included in this article.

I definitely didn’t see much, but sometimes the usual species satisfy well enough. Despite getting good looks at Virginia Rail , lots of Eastern Kingbirds , and a host of other birds he decided to stick by his old standby as his Best Bird of the Weekend, a Green Heron. How about you?

“It’s a good life”: Donald Kroodsma’s Birdsong

Good field guides to bird sounds are certainly available, particularly Nathan Pieplow’s for eastern and western North America.) It is written in English, mostly, or a form of English anyway, and on first encounter the book and its language is weird, intriguing, puzzling, and beautiful in a way outside the normal realm of experience.
