Virginia is for Birders

10,000 Birds

It’s southernmost third, given to Virginia by accident of history rather than geopolitical intention, lies apart from the rest of the state both culturally and geographically. This was only the 6th ‘Audubon’s’ Yellow-rumped ever recorded for Virginia. Something to work on, I guess.

Our land-locked species in temperate zones tend to become too focused on the little details of perpetuating their species to be sufficiently entertaining. Out on the shore, though, a whole suite of species exists in the places we gravitate to anyway.

As of mid-November 2021, the Collaborative had submitted more than 4,200 checklists (up from 1,700 in 2018) and has observed 691 species in the United States (up from 618). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.

This time, they counted 3,000 Northern Shovelers , 1,000 Green-winged Teals , 2,800 American Avocets , 2,150 Stilt Sandpipers , 820 Long-billed Dowitchers , 1,000 Least Sandpipers , 500 Western Sandpipers , and 150 American White Pelicans , along with lesser numbers for 30 other species.
