The Oriental Scops Owl may well be my favorite species passing through Nanhui, Shanghai during migration. Maybe it was raised by some caged birds in close proximity to humans, though I lack any proof of this theory whatsoever. The theory behind this is that if you give a young bird a name like this, it will be inspirational for them.

Sharing those special birds with so many like-minded people of all ages may have been the most magical experience on race day. Since we started at six instead of midnight, we didn’t get any owls, but we did get more sleep, made a stop at a delicious cafe, shared our meager sightings, and ended up with 116 species when the sun went down.

It watched me, calmly, until I sat down about 7 feet away (almost at minimum focusing distance) and we both regarded each other, and I occasionally raised the camera and snapped off another frame. I knew that it was a behaviour that was common in owls but I had never even heard of it with hawks before.
