The Juniper Titmouse ( Baeolophus ridgwayi ) is a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. One of my favorite bird species living by my house is the Juniper Titmouse. Although the Juniper Titmouse is not officially a threatened species, its numbers have been declining due to loss of habitat. Others had more luck.

The grass is green, the wildflowers are spectacular and now we have numerous species of dragonfly to enjoy as the season starts to change. Our recent bush-walking has involved some long muddy walks and are always productive as far as birds and wildflowers go and we have found several species nests. We have several of the cuckoo species around the Broome area and all cuckoos are more likely to be heard than seen, but every now and again you get lucky! Channel-billed Cuckoos have now left the Broome area and have headed north, but are the largest of the cuckoo family to visit the Broome area. Pallid Cuckoo.

The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Do not worry about touching the baby birds.

The other duck species that we observe often is the Pacific Black Duck and this duck is one of the most versatile ducks in Australia and can be found in most places. Pacific Black Ducks lay up to 16 eggs and sometimes two clutches are raised in a year. The stripe around their eyes makes them quite a distinctive duck.

The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. This is a bird species that much prefers to dive instead of fly, so taking photographs can be problematic.
