The Northern Spotted Owl is a “ threatened ” species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and it was famously the subject of extensive and protracted litigation in the late 1980s and early 1990s, mostly relating to forestry management plans in the Pacific Northwest. LEXIS 93734 (D. July 16, 2015).

Small numbers of this endangered species wander in the Caribbean lowlands and foothills in search of seeding “Mountain Almond” and other trees. I hope that they don’t follow through on those wishes and can also be cured via a dosis of education and knowledge that results in eventual appreciation.

I mean education. As well as birds, the reserve holds endangered species like African Wild Dogs. The reserve, in the eastern corner of Botswana near Zimbabwe and South Africa, isn’t open to the public in general, so I figured I’d share a few images here by way of showing off. To insure that those places continue to exist, birders should lead the way on education and advocacy regarding the Refuge System. The System also helps implement the Endangered Species Act and other federal conservation laws. The reason is twofold, size and mission. It’s not just for the birds.
