Pel’s Fishing Owls, Phantoms of the Okavango

10,000 Birds

Birding’s Holy Grails. They lurk ever-present in our sub-concious as sacred items on an unobtainable, yet highly desirable, list. We pour over photographs, read with envy the eye-witness accounts of the “lucky ones” and fabricate secret plans to abandon our loved ones and embark on expensive trips to track them down. For many birders, the Pel’s Fishing Owl roosts in a lofty position on just such a list.

Horse Slaughterhouse Proposed in New Mexico

Critter News

This article reaffirms my belief that it's more humane to slaughter horses in the US than to ship them for slaughter to Canada or Mexico. I don't like it either way, but one is better than the other for sure.

The Kirtland’s Warbler: The Story of a Bird’s Fight Against Extinction and the People Who Saved It: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

What do you say when someone tells you they will be spending the summer in the Lower Michigan Peninsula? If you are a birder, you say “Kirtland’s Warbler!” likely scaring the poor non-birder telling you her vacation plans. Yes, the warbler formerly known as Dendroica kirtlandii , now Setophaga kirtlandii , is one of those birds that make birders’ hearts pulse quicker and their legs churn faster.

Victoria’s Riflebird, a Bird-of-paradise

10,000 Birds

There are few families of birds as bewitching as the birds-of-paradise. They are feathered jewels with extraordinary breeding dances almost unrivalled in the bird world. They have been a crucial part of the culture of the islands and forests where they are found for the last 50,000 years, and were amongst the first animals of the East to make it back to Europe with the earliest Portugese and Spanish explorations.

The Ubiquitous European Starling: The Bird We Love to Hate

10,000 Birds

Everyone probably knows the story of how the European Starling ( Sturnus vulgaris ) came to the shores of America during the 19th century, but for those who don’t, this is how it goes. The American Acclimatization Society was a group founded in New York City in 1871 dedicated to introducing European flora and fauna into North America for “both economic and cultural reasons. 1 ” By 1877 New York pharmacist Eugene Schieffelin, an avid admirer of Shakespeare, was the society’

Tribute to Rik Davis

10,000 Birds

Rik Davis was a legend. And he touched and inspired more people than many of us will ever meet. I did not know Rik and I am poorly equiped to write very much about him. But he did touch my life. For what seems like decades, I have been hearing about Pale Male and the people that have studied, loved and fought for him and his family over the years. And one of the names that was invariably brought up at the same name, was that of Rik Davis.

Everyday Sunshine: Oh the places we’ll go

Looking for birds means we go where the birds are. Every once in a while, when it gets quiet, I look around and marvel at the places birds have dragged me out into. Here are a few. (in the comments, please share links to any photos you’ve taken of the wonderful places birds have led you) Light blooms at dusk near Mono Lake. Common Nighthawks and Violet-green Swallows abound.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of June 2012)

10,000 Birds

I have a feeling that this summer is going to be weird. How else to interpret the sudden arrival of April showers (and temperatures) in June after already enjoying summer weather? If you’re experiencing the same wacky weather patterns, don’t fret… maybe this means we’ll get another migration! My best birds of the weekend were all part of a huge swarm of Chimney Swifts circling around what I surmise was their chimney dwelling.

The return of the Long-tailed Finch

So, it is now officially winter! After several weeks of temperatures dropping to 10c (50f) we really feel like we are experiencing Winter here in the Tropics! A true Dry Season brings us these chilly nights and there has even been frost further north in the Kimberley, so be prepared if you are heading north! Of course we still have brilliant blue skies and 30c (86f) during the day, but the sun is setting at 5:20pm and the temperature soon drops off.

Bird Found on Plane

10,000 Birds

A songbird was found on a flight between Taiwan and Los Angeles and authorities believed it escaped from the custody of someone trying to smuggle it. The bird was not identified to species, which is kind of frustrating. This serves as a reminder that there are always jerks out there willing to break the law to fulfill demand from other jerks who don’t understand that wild birds should be left in the wild. a.

Amazing Seawatch from Robert Moses State Park

10,000 Birds

On Friday night Seth Ausubel, my frequent birding buddy, and I discussed our birding options for Saturday morning. A pretty major front was supposed to make its way over New York City in the wee hours so we decided to play it by ear and call each other early in the morning and figure out if the weather would be decent enough to go out at all and, if so, where we would go.

White-rumped Sandpiper Attempting a Quick Getaway

10,000 Birds

I spent some quality time recently with a flock of Semipalmated Sandpipers at Big Egg Marsh in my home borough of Queens, the same spot I enjoyed the company of some confiding Least Sandpipers last week. I was mostly trying to get decent flight shots of flocks of the small sandpipers whenever they flushed from feeding on Horseshoe Crab eggs. It’s always nice to stand on the shore and watch hordes of birds zip past though the species diversity left a little bit to be desired.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of June 2012?

10,000 Birds

One aspect of summer I absolutely love is the break from the routine. Obviously, that means a lot of things in a lot of contexts, but here, of course, I’m talking about birding. North of the equator, schools will be letting out for the summer and families will be packing up for adventure. Exotic locales make for exotic birding and even the most mundane territory can astound the first time visitor.

Mystery Trip!

10,000 Birds

Bird migration is rather mysterious. The hows and whys are still imperfectly known, the whens are variable, and the wheres have attracted speculation ranging from “under the earth” to “up to the moon” – with the most recent discovery of a North American species’ wintering grounds happening just this year. On a related note, a few of you — like my mom — may have noticed that I missed a couple of posts back there.

Keep your Taxonomy out of my Field Guide!

At the onset of this post, let me firmly state that I love taxonomy. I even attended taxonomy classes at university. Biogeography, speciation, splitting, lumping, all that jazz really sets my boat afloat (well, the lumping not so much). I also love bird identification. And I believe there’s a place for taxonomy, and there’s a place for bird identification.

Smoky in the Hearts of the Veterans

4 The Love Of Animals

Dogs, as well as cats, are considered the most popular and delighting pets all over the world. However, sometimes it is difficult to recognize them just as pets, which preserve silence and follow their masters almost everywhere. Is it possible to observe some features of humans in their behavior? Yes, responsible and caring individuals often treat them as family members, which seems essential and adorable.
