I woke up this morning and checked social media before the coffee, only to notice a post: “MEGA – a Cinereous Vulture [a.k.a. Eurasian Black Vulture] with a satellite transmitter spent the night in the arable fields near Belgrade”. Superficially similar but unrelated to New World condors, it is huge, more pterodactyl-like than bird-like. I dipped it some years back — I am not aware of any local sightings since, and to this day have never seen it.

Last Sunday afternoon we travelled out of town to once again bird from our vehicle across the flooded highway across Roebuck Plains. There are still many Egrets and the Magpie Geese are all on the move with their young. The number of Pied Herons in the area varies from two to twenty four at the moment. There are also many pairs of Black-winged Stilt with young and that is what I thought I was initially photographing in the header photo above.

Something that’s irked me more often than I’d like to admit is the inclusion of the word “common” in the name of a bird. It seems almost insulting, sure it allows some insight into the abundance of the particular species in a particular area at a point in time, but all birds are rare and exotic somewhere. The irony is most apparent when a bird so named is a legitimate rarity – I get excited whenever I see a Common Ground Dove , for example.

Can animals that typically live on both land and water live without being in the water?

Apologies for the weirdly worded title. I know that there are certain animals like frogs, capybaras, alligators, beavers and turtles that live on both land and water. If any of these animals were put into a place where they had access only to drinking water, but no body of water to swim in, does this jeopardize their ability to survive? Just something I got curious about surfing animal related youtube videos.

I took my dog out last night around 1 AM and was frightened by this low pitch screaming sound coming from off in the distance. It did not sound human so I am wondering what type of animal it may be. I am in the upper part of South Carolina in a developed neighborhood with lots of woods behind us. We have some farms with livestock nearby as well. Genuinely curious what it might be.

Was hiking through the southern Japanes Alps today (near Fuji) and ran into these tracks and droppings a few times. I was curious to which animal they belonged. The paw prints scream bear to me, but the droppings seemed to small (they were maybe 50cm away from each other). Then again I know nothing about animals or tracks so I'm just guessing Anybody knows which animal this could be?

CAT They have both been around cats, one was always great with cats until one scratched him, he’s been scared since and doesn’t do well with them. The other is perfectly fine. We had my cat over one day before she went to the house she is currently being fostered in and my boyfriend said we have to keep the door closed and her up high so the dogs don’t get to her.
