Sneeze Prone? Top 5 Dogs for Allergy Suffers

4 The Love Of Animals

When I was 12-years-old, my 6 pound Chihuahua was involved in a tragic fatal accident. It was bit of a traumatic experience for me and I vowed to never own an animal again. About 15 years later I finally began to have a change of heart. But as I began my search for a new family member at local shelters, I noticed that something was terribly wrong—I couldn’t hold the dogs I was considering adopting for more than 5 minutes before going into a sneezing convulsion.

Activists Set Fire to Idaho Fur Store

Critter News

I just don't support these tactics. I hate fur.it's disgusting. But burning a store just 1) makes us into terrorists, 2) does nothing to stop the trade, 3) probably won't even stop the store because they'll get insurance money and reopen and 4) only feeds into sympathy for the industry and the business owners. JMHO. Excerpted from Reuters. Animal rights activists claimed responsibility on Monday for a fire that caused $100,000 in damage to a Boise-area store that sells fur coats and fireworks, a

What Is This Warbler?

10,000 Birds

Yesterday evening I returned to Kissena Corridor Park, site of an amazing array of rare and difficult-to-see birds over the weekend, and enjoyed birding with some fellow Queens birders. We refound several of the birds that had been seen earlier in the day and on Saturday. But the wood-warbler in these images caused a disagreement as to its identification, largely due to the long range at which we saw it and the evening light made gloomier by heavy cloud cover.

Finally, I saw a bunch more birds and then I went home. -Way too many posts in the bird blogosphere Is there any reason to spend your time on a straightforward accounting of another birder’s recent outing?

Plague of Summer’s End: An Ode to the Carolina Grasshopper

10,000 Birds

When I was a child, we called them locusts. They appeared sometime between when we started to worry about the water level in the well and when we started to worry about going back to school. They were huge – well, huge for grasshoppers, anyway – and dust-colored, and they jumped like gunpowder-propelled novelties out of my way as I walked any sunny, dry path.

World Record!

10,000 Birds

It is not every day that one gets a chance to be a world record holder. But such was the magic of the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium that each and every attendee that bothered to show up on Saturday night, 17 September 2011, had the chance to get into the record books. For that fateful night was the night that 802 people set the new world record for most people doing a bird call simultaneously.

The Glory Days Of Fall

10,000 Birds

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking successive autumns. – George Eliot Indeed… very much so. I think most birders can understand this sentiment, whether you care for the weather or not. As birders know, weather, going back to school, football, The World Series, and fall colors all pale in comparison with the spectacle of fall migration.

Tumbesian Endemics South Ecuador

The south of Ecuador presents some very interesting opportunities for birdwatchers that have already visited the north-east and north-west slopes near Quito. On a recent tour we were pleasantly surprised by the high degree of endemism and the beauty of the birds that make the south such a special place. Here is my “Top Twenty best bird” summary for the places visited.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of September 2011)

10,000 Birds

Fall has officially fallen around here, yet somehow we’ve gotten off to an uplifting start. Finally getting out to look at some birds at the start of the season may just herald an auspicious autumn! I got out to the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory banding station to observe some masters at work. The catch of the day included a lovely variety of warblers, thrushes, and other migratory songbirds, the best of which was a buck Black-throated Blue Warbler.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of October 2011?

10,000 Birds

Is it still September? Only a bit more of the ninth month remains, which is probably for the best. September is a month of massive flux in both social and climatic terms. While saying so long to summer hurts, autumn in the Northern Hemisphere deserves our full attention. Anyway, October still boasts some excellent migrations! What will you be doing this weekend and will you be birding?

Hark, a Lark (Sparrow)! Make That Two!

10,000 Birds

Kissena Corridor Park underwent habitat restoration over the last two years which seemed to consist of the New York City Parks Department ripping everything out except some native trees and plants, planting saplings, and regularly applying herbicides to areas where invasive plants tried to take over the park. If the birding there over the last several days is any indication it would seem that the restoration has been a success, with regional rarities and hard-to-find birds like Black-billed Cuc

Quebec to Review Puppy Mill Laws

Critter News

The fallout from the huge puppy mill seizure is fueling calls for a review of Quebec's animal rights laws, which are abysmal even for Canada. It's unbelievable that the maximum penalty would be $1,200 if convicted. Exerpted from CTV News. Animal welfare workers are calling for stricter laws on breeding facilities after more than 500 allegedly malnourished dogs were seized from a Quebec puppy farm last week.

Lewis’s Woodpeckers Are Back

Lewis’s Woodpecker ( Melanerpes lewis ) In Flight, photos by Larry Jordan Driving home from work last week I finally saw my first Lewis’s Woodpecker ( Melanerpes lewis ) of the fall.
