Pink-headed Duck: The Search is On!

About four years ago I first wrote about the Pink-headed Duck , a charming species related to the pochards (although how, exactly, is up for grabs, like so much duck taxonomy.) Now Global Wildlife Conservation is out to get some fresh evidence and hopefully re-discover the species, which was officially last seen in the 1949.

The Fallen Yellowlegs

Over the course of the following hour or so we observed many different species *coincidentally* alight on the wall near to the body of the fallen yellowlegs. This Black-bellied Whistling Duck was on its way to visit its mate and young brood further afield in the same pond but made a detour. Spotted Sandpiper.

Little Big Year – Week 36: Southern New Mexico hotspots.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. We camped at the Elephant Butte Reservoir Campground, overlooking the lake, with the hopes of finding some more birds in the area. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks. US species – 243.
