So as the title says, there are a couple of coyotes in my neighborhood they are not very big but they can be very annoying and scary due to my dog being small and a meal to them. I have a French bulldog who just turned a year old and I’m very scared that they will attack her. What can I do?

The reasons for this are unclear but it could be that the high mortality rate associated with raising broods in built-up areas (cats, dogs, vehicles) means that the parent birds feel compelled to breed more often.

Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. Here, then, I was to spend three days and two nights, the nights most key because of the nocturnal nature of the ferrets.

Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range. among the Mustilids, and Coyotes and to a lesser extent Foxes. Plus, Coyotes eat Cats. So, in areas where Coyotes are becoming re-established, the Cat problem kinda goes away by itself.

We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. Although careful preparation, sophisticated intel from real ornithologists and a lot of planning had been derailed by half a meter of snow, we ended up scoring 63 species over the weekend. I ticked off 9 lifers.

None of my neighbors have cats and I'm only aware of one dog owner blocks away. I've heard someone saw some coyotes about a year ago but I haven't seen or heard them. We do have a possum and a raccoon that live somewhere on the property. And I have found one small dead garden snake in the street.

So, this pair (I assume there are two, though I only saw one today) of eagles has a territory including small dogs and stray children, baby coyotes, crows, but mainly squirrels and marmots right around its nest, and a major river backed up by a large dam about a mile or two away (the Mississippi) and several lakes.

I have a dog, cats (domestic and feral), birds raccoons, hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, bunnies and mice…they all share the yard and the woods. And if we are going to count cats as part of nature, they’re like a foxes or coyotes. Are we going to put out food for coyotes?
