This year, my main challenge is identifying 700 species within the borders of Costa Rica by December 31st. This means that when we drive across a bridge in the Caribbean foothills, we need to stop and check for key river specialist year birds like the Sunbittern , Fasciated Tiger-Heron , or American Dipper.

As with peninsulas and places situated on an isthmus, Costa Rica has more than one coast. White-crowned Pigeon might be on the list, but that rare prize for Costa Rica is far from regular. In Costa Rica, even the super shy Slaty-backed Forest-Falcon is seen more often than the island pigeon with the snow-white cap.

This Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl was ridiculous because it hung out a few feet from us and we left before it did! Bare-throated Tiger-Heron doing weird things on a roof in Tortuguero village- no comment. If you are headed to Costa Rica, I hope this post prepares you for all sorts of ridiculous sightings.
