A male Turquoise Cotinga from southern Costa Rica. Many Red-eyed Vireos have seen Harpy Eagles , have kept still upon hearing the haunting calls of forest-falcons. As they make their incredible, biannual winged trek, they also pass through Costa Rica. Literally in the millions. For birds, there are no borders.

This morning, they have seen some 10,000 Broad-winged Hawks , mixed up with two dozen Swainson’s Hawks , several Mississippi Kites and one or two King Vultures , Swallow-tailed and Double-toothed Kites , Merlins and Peregrine Falcons.

That 600th species was a Streaked Xenops , an especially uncommon bird in Costa Rica usually seen at Tapanti National Park. I’m actually surprised I haven’t seen one yet this year but then again, viewing a Jabiru in Costa Rica usually requires a visit to the Palo Verde area or Cano Negro. Streaked Xenops.

I live in the Central Valley, the most populated part of Costa Rica. But some days, I also hear the loud calls of a Laughing Falcon. Wondering where its food went, the Merlin flies south too and some come to Costa Rica. Other days, there is a Ringed Kingfisher making grackle sounds as it courses over a stream.

This Yellow Warbler was looking fresh before it left Costa Rica. The Cornell team is no doubt having a fantastic day of birding up there in beautiful spring Colorado while they identify Cassin’s Sparrow, Prairie Falcon, Lazuli Bunting , and other western birds in some of the same places I surveyed in 1997 and 2001.
