This is a very hot and dry region known as El Chaco where many interesting bird species can be found. Suddenly in the middle of the soybean fields there was a group of Lesser Rheas that were approaching the road. We stopped and observed this first group of adult Rheas that seemed quite comfortable with us and the road traffic.

Hawk watchers and birders who look at hawks (not always the same group!) There are probably more identification guides about raptors than there are for any other bird group. The new edition adds 11 species, birds such as Zone-tailed Hawk, Short-tailed Hawk, and California Condor that are only seen in specific areas of North America.

While the Bornean Forktail looks quite similar to the White-crowned Forktail, it apparently is a separate species, making it another Borneo endemic. The genus is Cyanoramphus , and they are sometimes known collectively as the kakariki (literally little kaka). The kakariki are an odd group of parakeets, particularly in terms of their distribution. These species, recorded by early European explorers, are now sadly extinct, but the disjunct distribution is something of a mystery.

A study has shown that they make false alarm calls when seeing other species such as meerkats with attractive food. In terms of breeding behavior, starlings are a diversified group – some use helpers, others do not. They are being parasitized by indigobirds which also use other host species.

As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. While the species favors forested hills at moderate elevations ( source ), there are no hills at all here at Nanhui, so maybe these individuals are outcasts or just eccentrics.
