The new Guide to the Birds of China (John MacKinnon) has been published. This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). I guess it would be wise for Shanghai not to make this species its city bird, as it may not be around for much longer. And it does not even live in reeds.

Another name for the species is Chinese Bar-backed Pheasant. and doing something with birds almost guaranteed having some bird species named after you.

David Tomlinson If you are American then you will no doubt know Perdix perdix as the Gray Partridge , an introduced game bird now widespread on the prairies of Canada and the northern states of the USA. The two species are only distantly related, for Grey Francolins are true francolins, hence the name Francolinus pondicerianus.

Shanghai parks are rather crowded and noisy places, but the goshawks – who unlike me have lived in China all their lives – apparently do not mind. Coming from somebody who has exiled himself to China, this is not exactly a compliment. Swinhoe’s White-eye was just promoted to the rank of a full species in 2018.
