David Tomlinson If you are American then you will no doubt know Perdix perdix as the Gray Partridge , an introduced game bird now widespread on the prairies of Canada and the northern states of the USA. The two species are only distantly related, for Grey Francolins are true francolins, hence the name Francolinus pondicerianus.

The Latin species name, however, is still elegans. And it is still justified.

Shanghai parks are rather crowded and noisy places, but the goshawks – who unlike me have lived in China all their lives – apparently do not mind. The Little Grebe is of course a very common bird that can still surprise by its beauty in its breeding plumage. Actually, as I just found out, this is not really new information.

So, back to the wonderful world of pheasants in China. To be safe, they just use both spellings on the species page. Never mind.
