I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. Cattle Egret is more closely related to herons in the genus Ardea then the species termed egrets in the genus Egretta. ibis and the eastern B.

Like my two previous visits I spent one day that I didn’t have to lead any field trips doing a run through central Florida looking for some of the specialty species of the region. From 1993 to 2004, biologists released 289 captive-raised whooping cranes into central Florida. The first farm on the left, where all the cattle are?

So what’s so special about seeing the resident re-introduced Whooping Cranes in Florida? Moreover, the pair I saw was feeding from a livestock trough alongside a group of cattle. One of the last remaining Whooping Cranes in the non-migratory Florida flock. According to the ABA, they are not countable.

The most famous of these is Cattle Egret , but Masked Duck looked like it might make things interesting for a while and Antillean Nighthawk has more or less staked out a little niche for itself in extreme southern Florida. But as soon as I stepped out of the car, I could not one, but two Cattle Tyrants preening in the trees.

The relative tameness of many Florida birds is one of the many reasons to come birding in this marvelous destination for wildlife. Remember that all of these birds, like the Common Gallinule to the left, are wild and free to go about their business.

In early May, I reluctantly accepted my parental obligation to bring my children to Orlando, Florida. At least, thought I, Florida would produce some superior birds. Orlando, Florida is an ecological blight. Actually, the best live bird I spotted on site was a wild White Ibis , one of my favorite Florida birds.

On a recent filming trip to Emeralda Marsh in Lake County Florida we managed to film and photograph a suspected hybrid between a Tricolored Heron and a Snowy Egret. As early as 1954 a suspected Little Blue Heron/Snowy Egret hybrid was reported from Florida. Hybrids between separate species are rare.
