During the Pleistocene, Dholes were found across the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe and North America, sharing their space with sabre-toothed cats. These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc. If they can survive next to such neigbours, how come they are endangered?

This critically endangered species was presumed extinct for over 100 years, and was not discovered again until pelagic trips (run by the same people as mine) began chumming to attract other seabirds. Getting rid of rabbits and goats was something that had been done for many years, but it was generally thought that rats and cats would be impossible to remove from all but the smallest islands. Of particular interest would be the commitment of the islanders to give up having cats as pets. Eradication is an all or nothing business.

I’ve written at length about the specific vulnerability of insular faunas and the catastrophic extinctions caused by the arrival of rats, mice, ferrets, cats and possums (amongst others), here in New Zealand fully half the pre-human bird species were lost. In New Zealand at least public opinion is generally behind 1080.

Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand. Ulva Island is one of many New Zealand islands that the DOC has worked very hard to remove all the pests, and re-introduce many of the endangered species.

It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism. It may be as simple as trying to hit the big white one.

Just a month after Busch Gardens took in a cheetah cub whose mother wasn’t caring for it, the park’s animal care team has identified the perfect four-legged friend for the 8-week-old cat: a 16-week old female yellow Labrador puppy. The two were first introduced over the weekend and have been spending supervised play times together each day.

One of the most alarming stories I read this week was about the call to rationalise the allocation of conservation dollars in Australia , shifting the focus from protecting endangered species to protecting habitats.

There are conservation efforts to save these species by individual aquarists, who are keeping and breeding them in hopes that they can someday be reintroduced into the lake. Of course that also brings up the dilemma of feeding cats and fish, who are omnivores and actually need to eat some meat in order to be healthy.

Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. It started with donation requests for spay and neutering cats but then quickly transferred to a trap, neuter and release organization. On the one hand, it’s better than doing nothing with a feral cat colony.

If you don’t accept that we sometimes have to do harm to individuals to do good for the species, well, nothing I’m going to say is going to convince you. There is no solidarity among the big cats. Shoot a few lions in the Selous and you protect a viable population of African Wild Dogs, a much more endangered species.
