A breeding bird atlas is a special kind of book. For the nature lovers and birders who participate in breeding bird surveys, the atlas represents hours, often hundreds of hours, of volunteer time spent within a community of citizen scientists doing what they love, observing birds. Three live and breed here, two migrate through the country in large numbers (one of those also breeds here in small numbers), and another migrates through and winters in Costa Rica. They won’t build a nest or look for a mate but other than that, their behavior in Costa Rica is pretty similar to that of their breeding grounds.

Yes, real summer doesn’t begin for another three weeks yet, but when weather heats up and non-breeding birds become increasingly scarce, spring is over! I’m headed down to rural Pennsylvania, where fun birds and dark skies no doubt await.

June in the Northern Hemisphere brings birds on their breeding grounds, some still frisky and others settled down taking care of their chicks. I experienced some of my best birding in a long time as I explored some new trails at my mother-in-law’s rural Pennsylvania home.

The Kirtland’s Warbler is an endangered bird species that breeds primarily in the jack pine forests of northern Michigan. Specifically, the warbler’s primary breeding range is concentrated in a few counties in the northern Lower Peninsula and the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Even though it doesn’t show on the NatureServe range map above, Golden-crowned Sparrow vagrants have been recorded eastward to Ontario and Nova Scotia, Michigan, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey; also south to Alabama, Texas, Louisiana and Florida 1. According to the data the authors gathered from banded and recovered Blue Jays , the species shows both a northward post-breeding dispersal (which we’re probably seeing right now, in September) and a southward migration. Some stop as short as Pennsylvania. That last bit is my own interpretation of the data.)
