discovered that the usual flock of several thousand Pink-footed Geese was wintering in the Broads National Park. It breeds in Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard and overwinters (singly and at mountain top hot springs – if Hollywood is to be trusted) along the coasts of northern Europe. Two Common Snipes , one Brown Hare and… geese!

There’s some excitement in putting up feeders and in discovering which species are gracing us with big invasions this year (2011, Montana: Snowy Owls ) but much of the time its a slog. Walking home at night, I hear a Boreal Owl calling from the conifer-coated mountains. And that season is coming to meet them.

John from A DC Birding Blog , and Patrick from The Hawk Owl’s Nest at Jamaica Bay at 8 AM Saturday morning for some birding. The Red-winged Blackbirds that were busy staking claims to breeding territory by singing from bushes, trees, and marsh plants were not groggy at all.

Good birds all but rather typical for the Coast Guard Station this time of year so we decided to walk over the nature center to see if we could find the Snowy Owl that has been hanging out there for months and see if we could find John his life Lapland Longspurs. And what a look at a life bird!

Shallows provide an ideal spawning ground for almost 50 fish species and submerged islands breeding ground for more than 100 bird species. Looking at the river, I cannot believe my memories of the same place this January – frozen solid, with just a small opening in the ice – and 26,000 geese in it! Little Owl – Athene noctua.

We immediately headed to an undisclosed location where Carlos had breeding Mangrove Cuckoos staked out. Anyway, we arrived, spotted a Great Horned Owl in flight and waited and waited and waited. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. Only one cuckoo?

The first impression you may get when you observe a Tawny Frogmouth is that it is some sort of Owl , because it can look similar. They breed after rain events and this was exactly the situation once again. Most were similar to what we had seen in September, with the addition of Magpie Geese in the flooded long grass.

Swan : “any of various large heavy-bodied long-necked mostly pure white aquatic birds (family Anatidae, especially genus Cygnus ) that have webbed feet and are related to but larger than the geese.”. Is it really “found on” Laysan and adjacent islands? But I’m no lexicographer.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. Other birds with webbed feet, including ducks and geese, have only three webbed toes; the hallux (which in birds is usually the “hind toe&# and in humans, the “big toe&# ) is free. Make up your mind, Ringer! Wicked, right?

I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barn owl because it was almost white. And my first Killdeer of year! Thanks for visiting!

I did finally get Snowy Owls in Queens , even if they did cause a bit of controversy. May – Migration’s Peak and Breeding Begins. Whether it was hawks , terns , seabirds , wood-warblers , shorebirds , geese , falcons , finches , or songbirds and woodpeckers I was there with my camera. Painted Bunting.

Ohio has tracked two families of their state-endangered breeding sandhill cranes and found them to have wintered over in Tennessee in 2010. Isn’t that neat?
