These birds (usually juveniles) are clearly linked to the growing breeding population in the region. Pallid Swifts were already back at their breeding sites, while the marshes provided a host of waders, including year-ticks such as Whimbrel, Curlew Sandpiper and Kentish Plover. These are Dunlins. A migrant Whinchat in Kefalonia.

Most websites – particularly those specifically targeting kids – do not mention the fact that juvenile Australian Pelicans have shown cannibalism ( source ). On the plus side, a website of the Australian Government provides a printout for an origami of an Australian Pelican. Disappointing.

Quite often there are Australian Pelicans , Brolga and Royal Spoonbills present and the egret species often include Great Egret , Intermediate Egret , Little Egret and Cattle Egret. Although we have never observed Painted Snipe at this location, they were recorded breeding here in 1960 and 1961. Purple Swamphens. Black-necked Stork.

Black Stork and three pairs of White-tailed Eagles breed here. Hundreds of White Pelicans and Long-billed Dowitchers proved the winter season has arrived. Oddly, I saw no Snowy Plovers, even though these apparently breed by the lakeshore. None were as satisfying as a Red-tailed Hawk that flew in lazy circles just overhead, and, to my amazement, a Peregrine Falcon that did the same.

Then a little later there was a spot of bother with DDT, but we pulled out of that one ok, with a toolbox that would surely stand us in good stead if we only had the will to use it – legislation and literature, captive breeding programs, nest platforms. And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle.

Although they breed on the west coast of Florida, Snowy Plover is a rare stray to this part of the state. American White Pelican: 19. Brown Pelican: 53. Peregrine Falcon: 3. Shorebirds put on a good showing with a total of 18 species, despite the shrinking number and quality of sites offering adequate habitat.

To the right of the shelter there were Brolga coming in to drink and feed on the lotus flower roots and a Black-necked Stork and Australian Pelican flew in during our visit. There were several Black-tailed Godwits that had returned from their migration to the northern hemisphere to breed. Birds feeding close to the shelter.

We soon added Pied Oystercatcher , Eastern Curlew , Black Swan , Black shouldered Lapwing , Silver Gull , Pacific Gull , Little Pied Cormorant , Caspian Tern , Great Cormorant and a Brown Falcon on the edge of town. Latham’s Snipe are visitors to Australia and go north to Japan to breed.

The adult Pied Oystercatchers were still at their non-breeding site at Gantheaume Point and will no doubt lay their first eggs for 2015 in the first week of July. Australian Pelicans roost along with Royal Spoonbills and White Ibis and on the rock walls and you may even spot a Swinhoe’s Snipe in the grass if you are lucky!
