When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population. But the ferrets kept dying. All the wild ferrets by 1974, and all the kits born to the nine captives, and finally the last of the captive animals in 1979.

The island is similar to Kapiti , cleared of introduced pests and used to hold endangered species. The Shore Plovers did well on the island, breeding a year after arriving (unexpected quickly as it turned out). The also show up on the mainland, particularly in Porirua Harbour which is across the water from Mana Island.

Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season.

The bird remained “lost” for 80 years until Captain Claude Grant rediscovered it in subtropical sandforest habitat thus disproving the Verreaux information. He worked for Ezemvelo (the provincial parks authority) and was an avid bird bander who also worked on DNA analyses, radio tracking, monitoring endangered species nests etc.
