A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Previously, even researchers had problems getting access to nesting Kirtland’s Warblers.

The latter is even captured in a somewhat gruesome video , in which the hornbill plucks a caged bird out of its cage and kills and eats it. At 15h59, the female picked up the fourth chick and killed it by repeatedly crushing it with her beak. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars.

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.

There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. Of course, the Common Cuckoo is generally seen in a rather negative way due to its way of dealing with bringing up its chicks. Most scientific research really just proves the obvious. Similarly, the Yellow-rumped Flycatcher is the White-browed Flycatcher in Chinese.
