Fledgling Yellow Warblers at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

But after a long weekend in Niagara Falls and Toronto with my extended family, which featured virtually no birding, I was more than willing to get out at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Tuesday morning (the 4th of July) to see what was out and about. Either way, life isn’t easy for a young bird.

Great Grassland Birds at Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge

One of those spots, Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge in Ulster County, was hosting a couple really cool birds for New York State so I was eagerly anticipating stopping in to see them. Bobolinks are among the best of the icterids. If you’re going to look for these birds you better do so very soon.

Are these, I ask gesturing figuratively around me, all the winter visitors or resident breeders we’ll be observing for the next few months? Until Mute Swans took over Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, gallinules bred there. The rush of migration seems to have ended just about everywhere in the world. How about you?

Traveling really rejuvenates the passion when local breeders become banal. I’ve only been in Virginia Beach for a few days and I’ve already knocked down most of my targets, including Blue Grosbeak and Yellow-breasted Chat at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
