It was very shortly after five when I pulled up at Haven Road at the Bashakill State Wildlife Management Area and immediately heard an American Bittern busy “thunder-pumping.” As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop.

The dog days of July, when birders desperately seek out south-bound shorebirds, odd breeding records, or anything else to keep themselves from losing their minds in a lousy birding time in the northeastern United States, is not my favorite time of year to bird. Either way, life isn’t easy for a young bird.

Howell’s A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America , which is absolutely my birder’s Bible for the region, says that Snowy Plovers are fair to uncommon summer breeders in the Lake Cuitzeo area, which they certainly are (breeders, though not uncommon). They were probably not preparing to go south.

Newburgh is a little over an hour north of New York City so I figured I could get a visit in to a few great locations for breeding birds that I hadn’t yet seen this year. They are going to stop mowing the path that leads to the blind to give these potential rare-for-New York breeders an uninterrupted shot at reproducing.

The Mourning Dove is a prolific breeder. Even though the female lays only two eggs per nest attempt, they enjoy a protracted breeding season in which multiple nesting attempts can occur every 30 days, and in Southern locations, nearly year round. population has been estimated to be approximately 350 million 2.

This area includes Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, part of Audubon’s Humboldt Bay Important Bird Area (IBA). Heading west on highway 255 around the north end of Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, we drove to the Humboldt Bay jetty in search of the Rock Sandpiper ( Calidris ptilocnemis ).
