An immature White-tailed Eagle. The same eagle? While Black Terns are regular migrants and even rare breeders (only 2 to 5 pairs nation-wide), White-winged are ill-numbered migrants and very irregular breeders (the last breeding was a decade ago). Soon I see a huge bird again. No, this time it’s a Black Stork !

Heronry at Sultanpur

There are a lot of predators drawn to such abundance with Eurasian Marsh Harriers and Greater Spotted Eagles known to take chicks from the heronry. It was thought that later nests with smaller clutches were either replacement clutches from a failed nest or from low-quality breeders. Eggs often fall victim to the ubiquitous House Crow.

Prespa Lakes National Park, Greece: the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world

Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. For longest lists, go there in May when migrants are still passing while the local breeders are active and visible. Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones).
