At first, I had no field guide, but even after I obtained it in the souvenir shop of the National Museum, I still wasn’t able to ID it – there were a dozen similarly iridescent starlings in the book. Statistics would go in favour of the Cape Glossy Starling , as I later learned.). Crow-like has to be a crow, doesn’t it?

Similarly when the Hoopoe and Cattle Egret were split, these are widespread birds with huge ranges even after the split. But the name… oh god the name.

The gardens are so bird rich books have been written about what can be seen in them. Cattle Egret in spring flowers. On my recent visit I managed to see specialties like Spotted Eagle Owls , Swee Waxbills , Cape Sugarbirds , Malachite Sunbirds and Cape Francolins. Cape Mongoose are also easy to see. Greater Flamingos. Strandfontein.

Rabbits are now thriving again after recovering their numbers and the Kent Wildlife Trust has implemented a grazing policy at Queendown Warren, with sheep and cattle, to supplement the rabbits’ efforts. A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater (above) and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets.
