At some point, I almost convinced myself that it would be a good idea to publish a coffee table photo book just showing Red-billed Oxpecker on various animals. I still think the idea is intriguing, but I have to admit that the potential range of buyers for such a book probably does not extend far from myself. Alone time. What a life.

A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. And when our driver continues, we have a new respect for our guide and feel sorry that we had no chance to book his services for earlier drives. There is barely enough light for a photo.

Up on Higgins near the book store it’s just the occasional bit of fairy floss angling down across my vision. Letting cattle trample upon the riverbanks, or promoting game animals and eliminating predators until the populations of elk and deer munch the stream-sides bare, also cut back on the replacement rate of the big trees.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

Smith Oaks is a migratory bird sanctuary owned and maintained by Houston Audubon, and the Rookery is a year-round bonus, full of Spoonbills, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Neotropical Cormorants, Anhingas, Tricolored Herons and Black-crowned Night-Herons. It was amazing. And so was almost every place I went before the rains came.
