The Grackle

The banner blackbird of most of Mesoamerica as well as much of the southwestern United States is the Great-tailed Grackle. In fact, this aggressive avian ambassador is usually the first bird a visitor encounters, often right outside the airport! I cannot help but deem the grackle. An ornithological debacle.

Being a bit older myself now, I have to point out that young human males usually do not look that good, at least to me. Then, I was not sure whether this was the right thing to do. A juvenile Chinese Blackbird. The Blue-and-white Flycatcher is one of the few birds in which the young male looks both distinctive and rather nice.

Returning home, reunions, smoke and birds!

I imagine I have a pretty good idea of what this does to the human inhabitants of the area, but what does it do to the birds? I was attempting to photograph some Yellow-headed Blackbirds , resting in the cat-tails, when much to my surprise, this Sora , Porzana carolina , just swam right out, and milled around in from of me.

Not sure that I impressed them, I chose to bluff them and looked left and right for a suitable tree branch to pick. Those bears live in the wild and are not used to humans. Brewer’s blackbird, Euphagus cyanocephalus. Red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus. From the behavioural point of view, what has happened?

Revenge Birding (Shanghai, early June 2022)

An Ashy Drongo apparently spends approximately 71% of its time scanning (what non-scientists would probably call looking around), 9% eating (less than a typical Chinese human but much more than me), calling 7%, flying 7%, and 6% preening. Another – much rarer – drongo at Nanhui is the Ashy Drongo. These birds have too much taste.

The nest cam, in my mind, is the perfect compromise — minimally invasive to the bird, while offering even the most unadventureous or house-bound humans the opportunity to get to know a small slice of nature. Perhaps I should hike Mt. Sentinel and check if the Mountain Bluebirds are back on territory yet.
