By Martin Garwood Martin has been interested in birds from an early age and has traveled extensively in pursuit of different species. But then again, it seemed such a shame to be driving past a really excellent bird reserve on my way home from working nearby, and not paying it a visit, however brief. It was a male Kestrel.

There are a lot of birds in the park at the moment with the various native trees flowering including Little Friarbirds , Red-winged Parrots and Red-collared Lorikeets. The park is called Cygnet Park and it is surrounded by streets with bird names including Bowerbird Loop. They are made of vegetable matter and will decompose naturally.

Unfortunately, developers are hungrily eying the 70-acre parcel despite some local opposition and the fact that it is a wetland that provides excellent habitat to a variety of birds (to say nothing of mammals, insects, etc). Expect to read more about Flushing Airport on 10,000 Birds in the future; the habitat is too good not to visit!

That did not stop a New Jersey animal shelter from publishing this rabble-rousing flyer on Facebook, all written in alarming red capital letters: PARK RANGERS AND VET OFFICES ARE PUTTING OUT WARNINGS. If you have a very small dog, be careful and use common sense. THIS YEAR THE HAWKS REALLY SEEM TO BE OUT IN FORCE OFF THE EAST COAST.
