Just before the final leg of the auto route, where it begins to turn back toward the Black-crowned Night-Heron roost, I spotted a substantial group of large white birds foraging just off the road. There were not only Cattle Egrets and Great Egrets ( Ardea alba ) but Snowy Egrets ( Egretta thula ) as well.

This is cattle country and it is actually fenced, which many parts of the Kimberley are not and you pass through Ruby Plains and then Carranya station to reach the crater. The first bird we observed as we climbed up to the rim was a Black-breasted Buzzard followed shortly afterwards by a Nankeen Kestrel. Wolfe Creek Crater-dangerous!

That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city.

There were a good variety of birds around the water body and the highlight was our first Black-necked Stork for the year due to our time away for a good part of the year so far. We like to camp in the bush about 60 kilometres south of Derby, because there is fresh water, tall trees and excellent bird-watching opportunities.

They consistently disappointed me by not being butterflies or small birds, and I associated them with an oppressive sun and being a long way from the garden hose and getting a headache for want of a drink.
