Among birds the Egyptian Vulture uses rocks to crack Ostrich eggs, the New Caledonian Crow and Woodpecker Finch (one of several Darwin Finches of the Galapagos Islands), uses sticks to extract grubs from inside a branch. This is similar to the fact that all birds, even first time breeders within a species build identical nests.

Shortly after the first bird leaves the feeder, the remaining woodpecker peaks around the edge of the feeder. These birds inhabit foothill and mountain woodlands and are closely associated with oaks and usually found in pine-oak woodlands. Acorn Woodpeckers are obviously very handsome birds and a load of fun to watch.

Like many birders, ever since I was a child, these wonderful, shy birds have been known as the Common Moorhen. While birding this weekend at Mason Farm, I spotted this pair of Gnatcatchers working on their tiny lichen and spiderweb cup in the crook of a broken Black Willow limb. Those birds that seem to serve little other purpose than to distract me with their best warbler impression.

Paljuvi Dam, some 30 miles SW of Belgrade, Serbia, is a known angling, but not so well known birding destination. Or are these birds taking a year off to see the world? The person who named this bird apparently cleverly chose the name Yellow-rumped Flycatcher to distinguish the bird from the Narcissus Flycatcher, which is also yellow-rumped. In Chinese, this bird is called White-browed Flycatcher, which introduces some (possibly undesirable) logic into the world of bird names.
