Lanthier, a veterinarian and walrus researcher who took the helm in Calgary two years ago, says the cancellation of the polar bears exhibit might please some animal-rights extremists, but the reality is a blow to Canada's white bears.

This is very bad news for a group that is largely nocturnal and has adapted to a secretive lifestyle, and is thus best detected by its tracks and signs. This small pine tree was very recently demolished by a brown bear. The claw marks on this brown bear’s footprint make you wish you had taken the other kind of canon with you.

In my case, the news came in the form of an e-mail, a “Rare Bird” sighting sent to me as part of the eBird.org reporting system. Now bear in mind, I have never seen a Wood Stork , nor was it ever on my radar, as they have never been in any of the areas that I have birded. I practically slammed on the brakes. It came back!

Tropical Cyclone Joyce dumped 100mm of rain in Perth as it travelled south as a rain-bearing depression and the whole family had the experience of torrential rain in Western Australia.
